Mengapa Lintah Mati Bila Terkena Garam ?

Lintah,  hampir semua orang mengetahui hewan ini. Hewan yang bertubuh pipih ini populer sebagai sang penghisap darah. Lintah atau Hirudo medicinalis memiliki alat hisap yang besar pada bagian posterior (sisi ekor) dan alat hisap kecil pada bagian anterior (sisi kepala). Alat hisap tersebut akan menempel pada korbannya dan mengisap darahnya. Lintah memiliki zat anti koagulan (zat anti pebekuan darah) sehingga saat lintah menghisap darah korbannya, darah tersebut mudah masuk ketubuh lintah sebab darah tidak membeku. Namun uniknya lintah akan mati apabila terkena garam. Mengapa hal tersebut bisa terjadi ?
Ternayata peristiwa tersebut, berhubungan dengan sifat koligatif, yaitu tekanan osmosis. Lintah banyak mengandung cairan yang konsentrasinya rendah. Garam yang dibubuhi pada permukaan lintah memiliki konsentrasi tinggi. Cairan pada tubuh lintah akan berpindah ke luar melalui kulit sehingga lintah menjadi kering dan mati, akibat kekurangan cairan.
